The Documentary

Unveiling a Legend

This documentary tells the inspiring story of Joan Williams Lewis, a woman who, through sheer determination, unwavering conviction, and a touch of neurosis, became a transformative force in arts education at Clark Atlanta University and within the Black Theatre community.

The film travels back in time to explore new ground broken by introducing Black prestige plays to audiences throughout Atlanta. Through a rich blend of original artwork, archival photographs, and historical materials, we uncover pivotal moments as Joan and her collaborators built a theatrical powerhouse driven by a singular mission: to serve, empower, and uplift the Black community. Viewers will discover how this unwavering sense of purpose became the cornerstone of Joan's lifelong commitment to championing Black playwrights while cultivating the next generation of artists.

Pouring into others was Joan's defining philosophy. As head of the drama department at Clark College, she built a program grounded in discipline, artistic excellence, and unconventional teaching methods that challenged students to discover their full potential. Through firsthand accounts from former students, colleagues, collaborators, and even those who occasionally found themselves at odds with her, audiences will gain a nuanced portrait of Joan as both a visionary educator and a demanding mentor. This chapter also offers an opportunity to examine Clark College during a transformative era, highlighting key institutional milestones and exploring how the productions staged by the theater department reflected the social and political zeitgeist of the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s.

Few things are more compelling than hearing someone describe how a single person changed the course of their life. Personal testimony has the power to inspire, illuminate, and persuade. Although Joan is no longer here to tell her own story, those whose lives she shaped will carry her voice forward.

Family members, friends, colleagues, and former students will recount Joan's profound influence on their personal and professional journeys. Among them is Kenny Leon, who credits Joan with igniting his passion for theater. Under her mentorship at Clark College, became the first Black artistic director of the Alliance Theatre and a Tony Award-winning Broadway and film director. His story exemplifies Joan's extraordinary ability to recognize talent and inspire others to take bold leaps of faith.

Joan's impact extended to countless artists whose names have become synonymous with excellence, including Samuel L. Jackson, LaTanya Richardson Jackson, Bill Nunn, and Rolonda Watts. Each trained under Joan's guidance before achieving remarkable success in film, television, and theatre.

As we explore Joan's remarkable life, the documentary also traces the broader history of Black theatre—a movement born from the necessity of creating spaces where Black voices, stories, and artistry could thrive. Ultimately, viewers will gain a deeper appreciation for unsung cultural architects like Joan Williams Lewis, whose life's work laid the foundation for generations of artists and helped strengthen the enduring legacy of Black Theatre in America.
